Mr. Stewart currently serves as Chairman of the Waterlaw Committee of the Real Property Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Mr. Stewart is a shareholder at Kotz Sangster.  His practice areas include general corporate and business law; formation of corporations and joint ventures; mergers and acquisitions; contracts; shareholder agreements; commercial law; and real estate.  He has more than twenty-five years of experience in recreational boating and maritime law.  Mr. Stewart is specifically experienced in yacht financing, vessel documentation and the foreclosure of maritime liens.  He has vast experience in the perfection and collection of maritime liens including preferred ships mortgages.  Mr. Stewart is a frequent speaker on issues relating to recreational boating and maritime lending.  He serves as general counsel to the Michigan Boating Industries Association and the National Marine Bankers Association.

He wrote “Public Access to Michigan Waters”, Great Lakes Boating, August 1996, and co-authored “Marina Condominiums on Dockominiums “and” Waterfront Development and the Regulatory Process”, Michigan Real Property Review, Volume 17, No. 1 Spring 1990.

Representative Matters:

  • Represented large German automobile manufacturer in successful purchase of piston business for purchase price of over $65,000,000.00. 
  • Represented gasket manufacturer in sale of assets to Tier 1 automotive supplier for approximately $15,000,000.00.
  • Represented large health care corporation in the successful purchase of three medical office buildings for a total purchase price of approximately $21,000,000.00.
  • Represented marine lenders, yacht owners, documentation services, dealers and marinas located throughout the State of Michigan on varied matters, including transfer of ownership, liens and contracts.
